Kalium is a food supplement providing highly bioavailable potassium, which contributes to normal muscle function and normal nervous system function. Potassium also contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

Potassium is an essential macromineral present in the human body in significant amounts. An average adult contains approximately 180 grams of potassium. It is primarily found within cells, particularly in muscle and cardiac tissue, and in intracellular fluids.

Within the body, potassium is involved in numerous physiological processes. Together with sodium, it plays a key role in muscle contraction, including cardiac muscle contraction. It contributes to the regulation of fluid and mineral balance inside and outside cells and helps maintain normal blood pressure by counteracting some of the effects of sodium.

Potassium also acts as a cofactor for several enzymes involved in energy metabolism. Furthermore, it participates in protein synthesis, nerve impulse transmission, and the conversion of carbohydrates into glycogen.

Adequate and balanced potassium intake may help reduce the risk of recurrent kidney stone formation and age-related bone mineral loss.

Potassium is naturally present in a wide range of foods, particularly fresh and minimally processed plant-based foods. Major dietary sources include fruits, vegetables, and legumes, especially dried legumes. Smaller amounts are found in dairy products, red meat, poultry, and fish.

Although potassium is abundant in foods, cooking processes and peeling can contribute to mineral losses. Among cooking methods, steaming is considered one of the most suitable approaches, as it minimizes contact with water and therefore helps preserve potassium content.

For healthy adults with normal body weight, the daily potassium requirement is approximately 2,320 mg for women and 3,016 mg for men. Requirements are lower in children under 10 years of age.

Potassium deficiency is considered highly unlikely in healthy individuals. However, inadequate potassium levels may occur in association with chronic diarrhoea, prolonged vomiting, kidney disorders, diabetic acidosis, prolonged very-low-calorie diets, or excessive use of laxatives and diuretics.

Symptoms associated with potassium deficiency may include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, mood changes, nausea and/or vomiting, reduced concentration, and drowsiness.

Low potassium levels have been associated with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Increased potassium intake, particularly when combined with reduced sodium consumption, may help lower the risk of adverse cardiovascular events. However, current evidence does not conclusively support potassium supplementation as a treatment for hypertension.

Potassium intake contributes to maintaining the proper balance of fluids inside and outside cells and supports the elimination of excess sodium, helping to counteract water retention.

Proprietà

Kalium is recommended in cases of inadequate dietary potassium intake and in the presence of water retention, particularly when associated with an unbalanced, high-sodium diet. Potassium, especially when combined with magnesium, may also be beneficial in cases of muscle cramps, fatigue, and impaired nerve transmission. The use of Kalium without prior medical advice is contraindicated in individuals with cardiovascular disorders.
