Iodine is a chemical element which acts as a micronutrient for the human organism. It can be found mainly in the thyroid in the amount of 15-50 mg.

Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine T3 and thyroxine T4) which regulate metabolism, monitor the body temperature and the development of the central nervous system. Furthermore, iodine also seems to be involved in the function of the immune system.

Iodine is present in specific food, such as some kinds of fish, seaweed, milk, eggs, meat, and cereals. Its dietary variability has origins in a widespread worldwide iodine deficiency. Even Italy is considered a country with moderate deficiency of iodine, especially the mountain areas. That is the reason why it’s recommended to use iodine salt while cooking.

The daily requirement of iodine as stated by the European Union is around 15 mcg. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, tt may be increased up to 250-290 mcg.

There is no precise data regarding its exact requirement, despite the fact that its deficiency is generally associated with certain signs of the organism. These include goitre (enlargement of the thyroid), chronic tiredness, skin swelling, reduced fertility, alterations of mental functions, weight gain.

In the case of children, the consequences of hypothyroidism may include low stature, delayed sexual maturity and puberty, learning difficulties, apathy and lethargy. Iodine deficiency can also increase the risk of breast cancer.

The use of potassium iodide (KI) is considered a preventative “antidote” in case of exposure to nuclear radiation, and it is used to protect the thyroid from the effects of radioactive iodine. However, this prevention must be done with the help of a professional.

It is suggested to use Iodium 225 in case of established iodine deficiency. Consult your doctor before use.

CONDITIONS OF USE

Take 1 tablet per day together with a sip of water.
